FAQ

The Twinstant Mobile Full-body 3D Scanner

How does it work?

Scans and orders can be taken and placed in 3 easy steps: 1. Scan, 2. Review, 3. Order.
1. Scan
Once set up, the Twinstant Mobile is controlled through the Twindom Capture App pre-loaded on the included laptop. A scanning session is started by filling a customer’s information in on the Capture App (name, email, phone number). Next, the customer poses in the middle of the Twinstant Mobile while the operator clicks a button to run captures.
2. Review
5 - 15 seconds after each capture, the customer is able to review the complete photo gallery. When the customer is happy with all the captures they have taken, the scanning session  is complete and captures are selected for preview processing (with an Internet connection). The data from the selected captures is uploaded to the Twindom Cloud Platform where it is processed into preview models and returned for viewing in 5 - 10 minutes. The preview models are also automatically emailed to the customer in the event that they leave before the models are finished processing.
3. Order
Orders can be placed by the customer through their account or by the Twinstant Mobile operator through the Twindom platform at any point after a scanning session is complete. Scans are never deleted from customer accounts, so they may be ordered and reordered at any time with the account login information.

How is the Twinstant Mobile controlled?

The Twinstant Mobile is controlled through the Twindom Capture App, which comes pre-installed on the laptop included with the Twinstant Mobile.

How easy is it take to set up and take down the Twinstant Mobile?

The Twinstant Mobile can be set up and taken down in an hour by a single person. The only tool required is a Philips-head screwdriver (included).

What are the dimensions of the Twinstant Mobile when set up?

The Twinstant Mobile forms a circle 10ft (3.05m) in diameter. Each tower is 7ft 2inches (2.18m) tall when unfolded.

What are the dimensions of the Twinstant Mobile when it is packed?

The Twinstant Mobile packed occupies a volume of approximately 14 cubic feet and can be packed in multiple configurations. Each tower folded for transportation is 43″ x 6.5″ x 4″ (110cm x 17cm x 10cm), with 17 towers total.

How much does the Twinstant Mobile weigh?

The Twinstant Mobile is approximately 330lbs (150kg). Each of the 17 fold-able towers weighs ~16lbs (7.25kg).

How is the system secured to the ground?

The Twinstant Mobile is not secured to the ground. Each of the towers is connected by a bottom and top ring of polycarbonate plastic which gives the system the rigidity to withstand people accidentally knocking into it. The Twinstant Mobile weighs ~330lbs and is therefore difficult to move once set up. Additional anchor holes and tamper proof bolts can be installed to further secure the system.

How much power does the Twinstant Mobile need to operate?

The Twinstant Mobile in its standard configuration requires one 20A/120V circuit with at least three (3) wall outlets available. Transformers are available for locations outside the US with different wall plug and voltage standards.

What type of Internet connection do I need?

Captures can be run without any Internet connection in offline mode; however, a reliable Internet connection is necessary to connect to the Twindom Cloud Platform to process 3D models, create customer accounts and place orders through the Twindom interface. All captures run in offline mode can be synced with the Twindom Cloud Platform at the click of a button through the Twindom Capture App interface, once a connection has been reestablished to the supplied laptop.
For each preview scan, ~15mb of data is uploaded to the Twindom Platform and ~5mb is returned and downloaded. Full-resolution 3D printable models upload ~120mb of data from the Twinstant Mobile to the Twindom Platform. Preview scan transfers take precedence over full-resolution transfers so as to not slow down the preview generation process. Please check upload and download speed and data limits (if applicable) with your Internet service provider in advance of purchasing a Twinstant Mobile to ensure an adequate connection.

How many cameras does the Twinstant Mobile use?

The Twinstant Mobile has 89 custom integrated cameras.

How many projectors does the Twinstant Mobile use?

The Twinstant Mobile has 25 custom integrated projectors, which blanket the subject in a pattern that helps produce high quality geometry detail.

What type of cameras do you use?

We use a custom camera module developed to satisfy the requirements of our hybrid 3D reconstruction pipeline.

Why aren’t you using DSLRs?

DSLRs do not automatically equate to quality. The DSLR approach to quality is to capture an excessive amount of data and hope that enough of it is accurate enough produce a good 3D model, which requires significant processing time and does not always result in a usable capture. We focus instead on guaranteeing the data we capture is accurate with a new hybrid approach to 3D scanning. This allows us to achieve a very similar level of detail to a DSLR system, but far more consistently and using much smaller and cheaper components. Regardless, the Twinstant Mobile’s combination of cameras, projectors, and advanced software produce 3D models of much higher quality than a full-color 3D printer can print.

Can I use my own laptop to run the Twinstant?

No. The laptop we ship with the Twinstant Mobile has been upgraded and customized to work seamlessly with the Twinstant Mobile and comes pre-installed with all of the necessary Twinstant Mobile capture software.

How does shipping the Twinstant Mobile work and how much does it cost?

The $19,999 price does not include shipping. You may arrange your own shipping or we can arrange shipping by air, ground or ocean for you.
Estimated transit times and costs:
Ground shipping domestic (within the US), 5 business days - approx. $800
Air shipping international, 7 days - $1,500 - $5,500

What are the payment terms for the Twinstant Mobile?

We require a 70% deposit to begin production of the Twinstant Mobile. The remaining 30% must be paid prior to shipping/pickup. We accept wire transfers and checks. Please contact sales for more information.

What are lead times on the Twinstant Mobile?

Lead times are currently 6-12 weeks for the Twinstant Mobile. Please contact sales for the most up to date lead time.

Scanning with the Twinstant Mobile

What can I scan?

The Twinstant Mobile was designed to scan 1-2 people. The official capture-able area inside the system is a cylinder with a diameter of 3ft (0.9m) and a height of 6ft 6inches (2m). More than 2 people standing inside this area may still process successfully, but we cannot guarantee the quality of those scans.

What can’t I scan?

We do not recommend using the Twinstant Mobile for scanning standalone objects. Poses that fall outside the scan-able area (cylinder - 3ft, 0.9m diameter, 6ft 6inch, 2m height) will be cropped. Shiny and semi-transparent objects are unlikely to process (glasses, chrome plated objects, shiny black fabrics, mesh fabrics), as are small objects and clothing features (thin framed glasses, purse straps).

What is the smallest item that can be scanned?

The Twinstant Mobile is designed to scan people and their pets. We do not suggest scanning anything smaller than a medium sized dog or a child under the age of five (5) years old. If you plan on regularly scanning objects of a small size, we recommend looking for a handheld 3D scanner instead of using a Twinstant.

How many people can I scan at once?

1-2 people, so long as they’re contained in the capture-able area (cylinder - 3ft, 0.9m diameter, 6ft 6inch, 2m height). Two people and a small child or a pet will often work as well. However, we do not guarantee that scanning more than 2 people will process successfully.

How long does it take to run a 3D capture?

1/4 of a second. This is fast enough to capture children and pets holding still, but not a subject in motion.

How many people can I scan in an hour?

The Twinstant Mobile is capable of running a new capture approximately every 10 seconds for a theoretical maximum of 360 captures/hour. In other words, the Twinstant Mobile can take captures as quickly as customers can pose and move in or out of the system.

How high is the scan quality?

The full resolution, 3D printable models have approximately 1 million faces and 8K textures.

What if I scan something not approved by the scanning guide?

The system will never prevent you from attempting a scan; however, print orders placed for scans that do not follow our guidelines will be rejected in our print review process. The scanning guidelines were created to ensure all scans captured will result in high-quality 3D prints that will not break in shipping.

Can I operate the Twinstant Mobile outdoors?

It is possible to operate the Twinstant Mobile outdoors, but we do not guarantee its performance under these conditions. The Twinstant Mobile is not water resistant and may become damaged if exposed to precipitation or extreme humidity. The following environmental requirements must still be met if scanning outdoors:
- No direct sunlight
- Well lit environment
- Operating temperature below 74ºF (23ºC)
In addition to these requirements, processing may fail if scans are taken in a windy environment as the wind can cause customer’s clothing and hair to move during the scan.

Can I operate the Twinstant Mobile without internet?

Yes, captures may be taken without an Internet connection; however, a connection to the Internet is required to to use the Twindom Platform for 3D model processing, customer account creation, ordering, etc. Captures taken in offline mode are saved on the supplied laptop and queued for syncing with the Twindom Platform. Syncing is initiated through the Capture App when an Internet connection is available to the laptop.

Do I need special lighting?

No. The white strips on each of the Twinstant Mobile towers is a high CRI LED strip that provides uniform 360-degree lighting. The Twinstant Mobile must still be operated in a well lit environment (the LEDs are not powerful enough to take captures in a very dark room).

How much post processing is needed per model?

None. All model post processing is done automatically at no additional charge when printing through the Twindom Cloud Platform. If you are printing on your own (not recommended, read the 3D printing FAQ to learn why), post processing time varies by the model and the expertise of the touch-up artist.

If I own multiple Twinstant Mobiles, do I need multiple Twindom Platform subscriptions?

Yes. Every Twinstant Mobile requires its own platform subscription to process models.

How does training work?

A remote training session is scheduled upon receipt of the Twinstant Mobile. The system is simple enough to learn how to operate it proficiently in just a few hours via a phone call. Extensive setup and training documentation and videos are also provided.

Support and Warranty

What is the warranty on the Twinstant Mobile?

The Twinstant Mobile has a 12 month defective parts warranty.

How does in-person ordering work?

There are two options: Twinstant operators may enter orders directly into the ordering interface on the Twindom Platform or find and setup their own point of sale (POS) system.
If a 3rd party POS system is used, orders must be entered in the Twindom Platform ordering page for them to be fulfilled. Orders are paid for by choosing to pay with either a credit card or a “partner account”.
If credit card is selected, the credit card is billed for the full retail price of the order and the difference between retail price and print cost is maintained in an account that is reconciled on the 15th of the following month.
If “partner account” is selected, the order is automatically fulfilled and the cost of the 3D print is maintained in an account that is reconciled on the 15th of the following month.
e.g.
Credit card payment through the Twindom Platform ordering interface:
A $100 retail value purchase (with a $25 print cost) is placed through the ordering interface using a credit card on January 20th. Twindom receives the $100 payment, fulfills the order and on February 15th a check for $75 ($100 - $25) is sent to the Twinstant operator.
“Partner account” payment made through the Twindom Platform ordering interface:
A $100 retail value purchase (with a $25 print cost) is placed through the ordering interface on January 20th with the “partner account” box selected as the form of payment. The payment is collected by the operator from the customer, we fulfill the order and on February 15th we send an invoice to the operator for $25, the cost of fulfilling the 3D print.

How does online ordering work for end-customers?

Customers may place orders by logging into their account, adding a scan to their cart and checking out at any time after their scan.
Customers pay online with a credit card or debit card. Payments made through the website are made to Twindom. All accounts are reconciled on the 15th of the following month.
e.g. A customer makes a $100 purchase on the website for a product that costs $25 to print on January 20th. Twindom receives the $100 payment, fulfills the order and on February 15th a check for $75 ($100 - $25) is sent to the Twinstant operator.

How do payments work?

An account is maintained with each Twinstant owner which records all orders and payments made during a given month. The account is reconciled on the 15th of the following month. In the event the account reflects money owed to the Twinstant Mobile operator, a check is made out to the Twinstant Mobile operator for the amount owed; in the event the account reflects money owed to Twindom, an invoice is sent to the Twinstant Mobile operator.
Orders are fulfilled as soon as they are placed regardless of whether payment has been received or not.
Payment from orders placed by customers through their accounts and orders placed by the operator using a credit card through the Twindom Platform result in an increase in amount of money owed to the Twinstant operator (retail price - cost of 3D printing) as the full payment amount is captured by Twindom.
Orders placed through the Twindom Platform for which the “partner account” box is checked result in an increase in money owed by the Twinstant operator by the total 3D print cost of the order as full payment is captured by the operator.

Twindom Platform

What is the Twindom Cloud Platform? (AKA: Twindom Platform, Twindom Cloud)

The Twindom Cloud Platform (twindom.com/admin) is our subscription-based web service that takes care of everything after a scan session is complete, including:

3D Printing

What determines 3D print quality?

3D print quality is made up of 2 parts: the quality of the 3D scan, and the capabilities of the 3D printer operator. Twindom scans have ~1 million faces and 8K textures (click here to browse our gallery to see what that means), which is often far better quality than 3D printers are capable of replicating. The second part, the 3D printer operator, is important because producing a high quality 3D print is not as simple as clicking ‘print’. There are many processes that go into preparing a 3D printer and properly post-processing a 3D print once it is printed that affect the final quality. The complexity of producing a high quality 3D print from a 3D printer is the single most overlooked and under-appreciated component of 3D photography; having printed tens of thousands of 3D prints ourselves, we are very well versed in this specialty and only partner with 3D printing partners capable of producing 3D prints that exceed our quality standards.

How does 3D printing and order fulfillment work?

When an order is placed by a customer through their account or through the Twindom Portal, we programatically determine which of our approved global 3D print partners is best capable of filling that order in a timely fashion. Once selected, we send the order to the print partner who begins fulfilling the order. Order status updates are made available on the Twindom Platform throughout the process.

How is the packaging branded when it arrives to an end-customer?

This varies based on the print partner we use to fulfill your orders. Some will ship unbranded and paperless, while others are capable of doing 100% custom branded packaging for an additional fee. It is also possible to ship all of the products to your address for re-branding and shipping or pick-up.
Bulk ordering prints for shipping to a central location is also available to save on shipping costs.

Why does it make sense to print through Twindom?

In short: for fast, low-cost, high quality 3D printing and fulfillment achieved through our global network of approved 3D print partners. For specifics, read on.
Why Twindom?
First, through model optimizations, volume pricing and automated 3D model repairs, we are able to offer 3D prints at prices very similar to what you’d pay for raw materials if you 3D printed on your own - especially when you factor in model touch-up time/cost.
Second, 3D printing is far more complex than 3D printer distributors will have you believe. Here are some additional factors to consider when choosing to print on your own, which are taken care of when printing through the Twindom Platform:
Capital cost: The only acceptable 3D printer on the market today, the Projet 660Pro, costs $72,000+ and requires a $8,000+ annual maintenance contract.
Uptime: 3D printers are prone to failure and rarely have >50% uptime especially when starting out (when you are new to performing routine maintenance). This means you will want at least 2 printers for redundancy, or risk not being able to print your orders (a $160,000 investment). Expect uptime to be around 55-65% of the time.
Poor Quality: 3D print quality is not guaranteed; it requires substantial knowledge regarding the maintenance of the 3D printers and post-production techniques to achieve top level 3D printing quality. This means you are often forced to either reprint multiple times and lose money on orders, or ship quality that your customers will not be happy with.
Surge Demand: 3D printers can only print so many figures in a single day. During periods of high volume, such as the holidays, your 3D printing queue can grow very long and push lead times back multiple weeks if not months.
Time Investment: 3D printing, post-processing and maintenance are a part-time job only if done properly; otherwise the time invested can easily inflate.
Hazardous Materials: The 3D printing process involves exposure to chemicals and materials that can be hazardous to your health and damage your surroundings. For example, the models are finished in cyanoacrylate (active component in superglue) for which you need proper ventilation, a chemical mask and full protective clothing to avoid skin contact until the model dries.
Shipping Infrastructure: Tracking and shipping orders involves another layer of infrastructure to ensure the right products are going to the right places.
Breakage: Breakage during post production and in shipping is a serious problem that we and our print partners manage for you. If you print on your own, you are responsible for all breakage.
3D Touch-ups: We automatically touch-up all 3D prints printed through the Twindom Platform. If you are printing on your own you will have to touch-up all of your own 3D scans, which can be time intensive and expensive if you do not know what you are doing.

How do you achieve such low prices?

We run numerous algorithms to automatically repair the 3D scans, then we optimize and hollow the 3D models to save on total volume. Because we order large quantities of 3D prints, we have negotiated reduced 3D printing rates with our print partners.

Do you also sell the 3D printer?

We do not.  You will have to contact a 3D Systems reseller for that, but before investing in a 3D printer, we encourage you to read more about why it makes sense to print through Twindom.

How durable are the figures?

A figure is comparable to a wine glass in terms of durability. You can handle them without much worry, but they will break if dropped on the ground. The figures are not water proof and will get water spots if spilled on. Figures should be kept away from continuous exposure to bright lights, especially direct sunlight, as they will fade over time (much like a traditional photograph).

What 3D print sizes are available?

Our mix of 3D printed products and sizes is constantly growing. Please contact us for the most up to date information.

How are children priced?

Infants under the age of 1 must be scanned with at least one adult and are included at no additional charge. Children over 1 year of age are considered adults and are priced according to the standard person pricing.

How are pets priced?

Small pets (smaller than an infant) must be scanned with an adult and are included at no additional charge. Pets larger than an infant are considered a person and may be scanned alone. They are priced according to the standard person pricing; however, the models are scaled down before printing according to the position the pet is in. If the pet is standing up, the model is scaled to 50% height (a 7″ model of a dog standing would be printed at a height of 3.5″), if the pet is laying down the pet is scaled to 25% height (a 7″ model of a dog laying down would be printed at a height of 1.75″).

What if I already have a printer?

We have an enterprise plan available on the Twindom Platform that allows unlimited full quality 3D model downloads. The full quality 3D models are not touched up prior to being made available for download. Please contact sales for more information.

How can I become a print partner?

What do I need to know about customs and duties on the 3D prints?

Depending on the destination country of the order, duties and taxes may be assessed upon importation. Full-color sandstone 3D prints are classified under HS code 6913901090.

Can the 3D prints be shipped to international customers?

Yes, with the exception of countries not serviced by regular carriers due to international policies, trade embargoes and economic sanctions. 3D prints shipped internationally may be subject to additional duties and taxes.

How long does it take for 3D prints to ship internationally?

International ship times vary by country and the chosen ship speed and carrier.

Can I offer different and/or larger 3D print sizes?

Yes, you may, assuming the size is possible for us to print. Please contact us for more information regarding custom sizing. To note: we have carefully selected the default print sizes to offer the greatest value (size vs. price).

Where is the printing done?

The printing is done by one of our approved 3D print partners around the world. When an order is placed, a 3D print partner is selected based on current lead times, pricing, and proximity to the final customer.

General

Is 3D photography easy to do? Do I need to be technically inclined?

Operating the Twinstant Mobile is simple. We have tackled and solved all of the most difficult technical problems that come with 3D scanning and printing to create a truly turnkey full-body scanning system, so you can focus on scanning as many customers as possible. The Twinstant Mobile can be transported in the back of a car, set up in less than an hour with a single screwdriver, and operated with just a few clicks of a mouse. If you are comfortable operating a computer, you will be comfortable using the Twinstant Mobile.

Why shouldn’t I use a handheld scanner to scan people?

You won’t be able to scan kids, pets and some adults due to movement. Handheld scanners require that customers remain motionless for upwards of a few minutes or the 3D scan will not process properly. Some adults are capable of standing still for this period of time, but from our experience pets and kids are not. The slow scan time of a handheld scanner also means it is only feasible to capture ~6 scans/hour.

Where can I see and try the Twinstant Mobile?

Please contact us to learn where the nearest Twinstant Mobile is to you or to schedule a demo at our headquarters in Berkeley, California.

Are there any discounts available?

Please contact sales for available promotions. Discounts are available on sales of multiple units at once.

What is a preview model?

A preview model is a 3D model we process as soon as a scan is submitted for processing, so that a customer can review their 3D scan while still onsite. In contrast to the full resolution, print-quality 3D model that is processed when a customer places an order, a preview model is processed using only a minimum viable amount of data to speed up the processing time (5-10 minutes to process) and produce an image that is a basic representation of the final product.
